What is a general warehouse worker?
This is one of the main warehouse roles you’ll find on your job search. A general warehouse worker role is for someone who wants to do a variety of different things. You’ll be receiving incoming shipments, checking and confirming everything was received with no damage. You’ll also be involved with the picking & packing of products as per customer orders and helping with the transportation of outgoing goods.
If you’re looking at supercharging your CV or trying-before-you-buy with different roles within the warehouse, this is the perfect position for you.
What are the responsibilities of a general warehouse worker?
You will take on a variety of tasks, and no two days will be the same. Your role involves:
- Accepting incoming orders
- Dealing with Goods in/Goods out
- Picking and Packing customer orders
- Ensuring all packages are shipped in a timely manner
- Inspecting parcels to ensure none of them are damaged
- Dealing with returns/processing them
What are the most common asked questions in a warehouse interview?
Usually, the interview process is nothing to worry about, a lot of the time it’s all about the team getting to know you and your skills.
The typical questions asked are:
- Why do you want to work in a warehouse?
- Can you perform all the essential tasks required?
- How do you stay organised?
- Do you have any experience working within a warehouse or anything similar?
- What are your long-term career goals?
These questions are standard, so don’t panic. The only question that’s really important is if you can perform the essential tasks. You’ll usually have a tour of the warehouse first before being interviewed, so if you’re worried about heavy lifting or the repetition, speak to the interviewer about the role as it may not be for you. A lot of the roles require heavy lifting and are repetitive, but you’re rewarded with great pay and lots of additional benefits, it’s all worth it!
What are the 3 most important things about working in a warehouse?
The most important things are:
- You’re in good physical condition. As you know the tasks are repetitive and require lots of heavy lifting. You’ll be standing a lot of the time, squatting and walking for most of your shift.
- You’re comfortable with new technologies. Warehouses are upgrading constantly, with new systems to help you find stock, process returns and help with general admin. To work in this role, you’ll need to be able to keep up.
- You have a positive attitude and value teamwork. One of the best things about working in a warehouse is you’re never alone, you’re all a team. You’ll need to value that and help your fellow co-workers as best you can.
Do I need any qualifications to be a general warehouse worker?
No qualifications are needed for this role. You’ll just need the following skills:
- Work in a team
- Be organised
- Have a great eye for detail
- Good numeracy skills
- Can complete daily/weekly KPI’s
- Follow all health and safety measures.
If you don’t have all of them, don’t worry, a willingness to learn is one of the biggest attributes they look for. You’ll pick these skills up as you go along.
